The Dark Side Vapes E-CLIPSE is a portable dry herb vaporizer described as simple to operate with a special heating element that heats up quicker then competing units and is really the part that interested us. Dark Side Vapes, the manufacturers, says you have complete control with various temperatures, long battery life and discreet appearance for vaping in public spaces.
Let’s see how this unit compares to the different herb vaporizers from Boundless we reviewed a few weeks ago.
QUALITY OF CONSTRUCTION
When the device was removed from the package the first thing it reminded me of was those gunmetal Nokia flip phones from the late 90’s. You’ll kinda see what I mean with the photos below.
The base unit without attaching either mouthpiece weighed 91.2 grams or about the same as a smartphone. It’s basic dimensions were 3 5/8 inches tall with a thinner bottom section of 1 1/2 inches wide by 3/4 inch thick while the top is 1 5/8 inches wide by 7/8 inch thick.
Obviously the built-in 3/4 inch OLED display grabs your attention. It can show either Fahrenheit or Celsius, the Target Temperature, Current Temperature, Battery Life, and a Heating vs Warm (ready) status indicator. The dry herb heating chamber is a cylindrical shape and made of ceramic, measuring 5/8 inch deep and 3/8 inch in diameter. It’s lithium polymer battery which has a total capacity of 2200 mAh uses 3.7 volt charge via a micro-USB to USB for charging.
Dark Side Vapes included 2 different mouth pieces, one made from a piece of flat plastic and one made with a glass tube mouthpiece. The filter screens are built in to each mouthpiece respectively. The dimensions based on the mouthpiece used are 4 inches tall with the plastic mouthpiece and 4 3/4 inches tall with the glass tube.
They also included in the box 4 silicone rings, a long cleaning brush, and a single scoop concentrate tool intended to be used with dry herb.
EASE OF USE
With only 3 buttons, this device should be easy to use, right? Let’s take a look.
As you can probably tell from the above photo, the buttons comprise of the on/off, up arrow and a down arrow. To activate or shut down you simply press the power button 5 times rapidly. If you forget to turn off the E-CLIPSE, there is a built in safety timer that shuts it off the device automatically after 5 minutes.
It took the unit 3 hours to fully charge from a drained state and there is a note about not using while charging. The instructions also indicate not to overcharge or leave charging overnight. We’re not fans of having to keep tabs on a device that takes nearly 3 hours to charge.
We suspect if the device is left unattended while charging, it likely degrades the batteries longevity once it’s capacity is reached or worse, could result in the device failing. We didn’t want to find out the hard way so we followed the instructions.
Once the unit is turned on it will immediately begin heating up to the last used target temperature within 30 seconds. The Up and Down arrow buttons control the temperature which can be adjusted by a single degree from 300 F to 435 F (149 C to 224 C). The display shows the temperature in either Fahrenheit or Celsius so the choice is yours. Select between these two settings by holding the Power button down for 3 seconds.
They provided a 3 1/8 inch long single scoop concentrate tool which is nice however not really suitable for scooping ground dried herb with as the scoop isn’t big enough. An effective 2 3/4 inch long cleaning brush was included so as not to scratch the ceramic chamber when cleaning which is appreciated. The bristles comprise almost 1 1/2 inches of the brush.
The E-CLIPSE Dry Herb Vaporizer by Dark Side Vapes was listed for $129.99 but is now only $99.99 USD from NYVapeShop.com which also offers free Shipping within the USA and a full refund money back guarantee within 30 days from delivery.
This unit has quite a few positive features depending on your perspective. The glass tube mouthpiece does actually cool the vapor down a little when compared to the plastic mouthpiece. It also heats up very quickly just like they described and for those looking for discreetness, this device produces very very little vapor which should be appealing.
However we did note that regardless of the strain we used, they all ended up tasting like warm corn syrup.
