RIFF’s Subway Scientist is an indica-dominant strain described as having dark green tones with purple highlights and a sweet berry or grape scent. This aromatic strain is the result of a balanced terpene cocktail that includes myrcene, limonene, linalool and beta-pinene. In case you’re curious, learn how terpenes affect cannabis flavours, smells and effects.
Much like their other strains, RIFF says Subway Scientist is greenhouse-grown using natural and ecologically friendly techniques. This sounds great, but how does Subway Scientist measure up to similar products like 48North’s Granddaddy Purple or the very affordable Grand Daddy Purps from Good Supply?

Smell
The product arrived in an industry standard black pastic container with security top. Opening the lid released the faint smell of fresh pine with a tiny hint of berry but that faded very quickly. We were actually surprised at how little aroma the bud contained. Even removing it from the container and inhaling deeply provided only a mild smell of berry. Originally the smell was probably great, but by the time we opened the product it was pretty much gone.
Appearance
The appearance helped make up for the lack of smell. The Subway Scientist buds were all very compact and dense. The leaves were a healthy green tone, covered with trichomes and had firecracker like orangey hairs. You can also detect purple highlights through the tips of the leaves when you study the buds closely.
Flavour
Up for a walk in the forest? We were expecting a sweet berry flavour or possibly grape (based off the description provided by RIFF). However the taste reminds us more of pine then berry. Although we wondering if the flavour had been lost similar to how the smell had disappeared… could this be fixed by including a terpene shield? Most of these products sit for several months after being packaged so there is definitely a need to look at how best to preserve from packaging to customer delivery.
Experience
Although the flavour was not what we expected, everyone still enjoyed Subway Scientist from RIFF. It delivers a strong high that left us both feeling relaxed and a bit spaced out. This was accompanied with a moderately strong body buzz that last for over 30 minutes. Given the low price point, Subway Scientist is a solid product especially for the end of the day when you’re looking to kick back and veg.
